Value Judgement (2023) is an interactive sculpture that arbitrarily categorises the viewer, playfully overturning structures of perceived value in the art space.
I use craft materials in contrast with the technological and mechanical elements to question assumed structures of value and to introduce a sense of softness, play and absurdity to the alienation of machines. The combination of the constant regeneration and speed of technology with supposedly low-value crafts reinforces the uncanny by creating a ‘both-and’ other, outside of a binary, or structured material hierarchy. By using cardboard on a large scale with a technical construction process I ignore its disposability and lack of value repositioning it within these structures of value. With this humorous and absurd combination of materials I propose an alternative where there is an adjustment of norms (that which is already valued) to accommodate otherness (that which is deemed outside of these norms).
