In The Whisperer the mask and costume dislodge the familiar human figure morphing it into a new character with large horns, curling, root-claws and fleshy tentacles. The collaborative photography series explores the idea of the psychopomp; a mystic guide into dreams or the afterlife that appears in many forms throughout mythology such as the Greek god Hermes, the Sandman and Egyptian god Anubis. The obvious power and threat of the figure implied through the horns and claws is softened by the fleshiness and open amour spaces in the mask. Distorted through reflections, cropping and rotations the unfamiliar and frightening figure does not confront the viewer directly. Instead, the key focus is water – symbolic of life, healing, transition, and passage of time. This mystic guide seemingly blends and grows from these surrounds suggesting the transitional as a non-threatening, sacred physical space.
